“What happens to a dream deferred? / Does it dry up / like a raisin in the sun?” -Langston Hughes
Make sure you check out “A Raisin in the Sun” tonight on ABC, 8p eastern and pacfic, 7p central.

While in elementary school, I won the role of Ruth (initially played by Ruby Dee and most recently done by Audra McDonald…love both of them). Of course I had no idea how serious this play was…I was in the freakin 4th grade! lol
But my mom got the video and made me watch it so that I could better understand my role. That didnt work. It was long and in black & white….torture for a 9 year old.
Of course, now I understand it’s importance. And please note, Lorraine Hansberry (the playwright who penned “A Raisin in the Sun”) became the 1st Black woman to ever have a play appear on Broadway. So not only was the play an excellent way to introduce the battles of Black folk into social commentary, it became a part of Black history.
I kinda wish Diddy’s non-acting self wasn’t in the movie (did he really do Sidney Poitier’s role justice?), but hey, you can’t ask for too much.

At least we get Claire Huxtable aka Phylicia Rashad’s refined, classy self –

who won the Best Actress Tony Award for her role in “Raisin” — becoming the first African American actress to ever win the Tony in this category
and Audra McDonald’s beautiful self – who won the Best Featured Actress Tony Award for her role in the play…she has 3 other Tony’s from her other work.

and the gorgeous Sanaa Lathan – who was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress for her performance

Check below for the trailer.
